Guinness World Records has officially confirmed Hilda Effiong Bassey, also known as Hilda Baci, as the new record holder for the longest cooking marathon by an individual. The 26-year-old Nigerian chef cooked for a total of 93 hours and 11 minutes, surpassing the previous record of 87 hours and 45 minutes set in 2019.
Hilda began her cooking marathon on May 11 and continued until May 15, preparing over 100 pots of food during the four-day event. Although she aimed for a record of 100 hours, a deduction of almost seven hours was made due to mistakenly taking extra minutes for one of her rest breaks early on in the attempt.
To prepare for the event, Hilda created a 35-item menu as a guide for each meal she cooked. She ensured she had the necessary ingredients and had her team procure additional food items as needed during the cook-a-thon. Hilda’s record-breaking attempt gained significant attention on social media, with millions of followers tracking her progress through an Instagram live stream.
Throughout the event, Hilda had to follow certain rules, including having at least two items being prepared or cooked at all times. While a sous-chef was permitted to assist with prep work, washing up, and cleaning the kitchen area, Hilda had to do all the cooking herself. Furthermore, all items prepared had to be consumed, and Hilda invited members of the Nigerian public to enjoy her freshly made meals. Any leftover food was donated to the Festus Fajemilo Foundation.
Hilda’s record-breaking feat not only aimed to put Nigerian cuisine on the map but also inspired young African women to pursue their dreams. The cook-a-thon received support from high-profile Nigerian figures, including the Vice President, the Governor of Lagos State, and singer Tiwa Savage.
After graduating with a degree in sociology, Hilda embarked on her culinary career, drawing inspiration from her mother, who is also a chef. She has achieved success, including hosting the television show “Dine on a Budget” in 2020 and winning the Jollof Face-off competition in 2021, representing Nigeria.
With her remarkable cooking marathon, Hilda Baci has now earned her place as an official Guinness World Records title holder.
