While most people do not believe there is black magic popularly called juju in football especially in Europe, Ghana football legend Asamoah Gyan has revealed he witnessed such things during his time in Europe and Asia.
The 36-year-old has spent most of his playing career in Europe and Asia before he returned to Ghana where it all began.
He has played for Liberty Professionals (Ghana), Udinese (Italy), Modena (Italy), Rennes (France), Sunderland (England), Al Ain (United Arab Emirates), Shanghai SIPG (China), Al Ahli Dubai (United Arab Emirates), Kayserispor (Turkey), NorthEast United (India) and Legon Cities (Ghana).
Gyan, who is currently on a radio tour ahead of his book launch made the revelation during an interview on Angel FM in Accra.
Gyan, in the interview, revealed he witnessed instances where clubs performed rituals before a match or even before the season starts. According to him, he believes doing good to people supersedes all rituals one needs to succeed.
“My juju is all about doing good to people. That is giving out to the needy,”
“I will urge everybody to do good. Help people, their words go a long way to affect you positively in life and these things help man to become successful.”
“The strange thing I saw during my time in Europe was when I went to Turkey. Before a game, they slaughter a sheep in front of the bus, then in India, before the league season starts, they take us to the shrine for fortification,” he said.
The discussion on the use of black magic has been a major topic whenever the Ghana national team, the Black Stars goes to a tournament or when the Ghana Premier League starts.
In 2012, Black Stars coach Goran Stefanovic said the use of juju affected the team’s performance at the AFCON in Gabon and Equatorial Guinea.
“After losing to Zambia, there arose so many accusations amongst the players during my meeting with them. I have learnt great lessons from African football and also about Ghanaian players’ behaviour on and off the field.”
“We all need to help in changing some players mentality about using black power to destroy themselves and also make sure we install discipline and respect for each other,” Goal.com reported.
