The news of C.K Akonnor’s ‘sacking’ as the head coach of Kumasi Asante Kotoko came as a surprise to the fans of Kumasi Asante Kotoko as well as football lovers in Ghana.
Kotoko appointed the former Black Stars captain late last year and tasked him to build a team and win the CAF Champions League or the Confederation Cup in three years.
However, after less than a year as the head coach of the Porcupine Warriors, Akonnor has been asked to take up the Technical Director role at the club. A position, according to reports, Akonnor does not want to take.
Albeit others believe he is indirectly being sacked from the club, the club insists he has been given a higher position at the club. Also, no reason has been given as to why he has been given the new appointment.
But according to unconfirmed reports, the reason why the management of the club decided to give him a new role is that Akonnor wanted the club to sell 12 of the 13 players he made the club signed for him. According to the report, the management of Kotoko was not happy with the decision, therefore, the need to change his position.
The Post also understands that the move by the club will also help them avoid paying Akonnor over ₵100, 000. Akonnor would have been paid the amount had the club told him to pack his bags but because he will still be working for the club, the club has avoided paying the money.
It is believed that C.K Akonnor is yet to accept the offer or reject it but as indicated earlier, he is not interested in the new position.
