A new feature to Google Photos this year is the option to hide or protect specific photos and videos so that they don’t show up in your feed or on other apps.
This allows you to add an extra level of protection to any sensitive photos, ideal for when showing photos to friends and not wanting everything to be on display.
The feature will first be launched on Pixel devices and will soon be available on all Android phones as well.
Set up a Locked Folder
When you do this method for the first time, you’ll have to set up a Locked Folder.
Open the Google Photos app, go to ‘Library’, click on ‘Utilities’ and then ‘Locked Folder’.
Select ‘Set up Locked Folder’ and follow the on-screen instructions in order to unlock your device.
If using a Pixel device and you don’t already have a screen lock in use, you will be asked to set one up in order to lock the folder.
Save directly from the camera to a Locked Folder
When taking your photo, open the camera app and in the top right corner, just select ‘Photo Gallery’ and then choose ‘Locked Folder’.
Photos will then automatically be stored there.
Move photos or videos to a Locked Folder
Select the photos and/or videos you want to move to a Locked Folder and on the top right, select the three dots and then ‘Move to Locked Folder’, followed by ‘Move’ to confirm.
Remember though, that doing this will delete any back-ups of these files on the cloud.
