Ghana President Nana Akufo-Addo has ordered the country’s sports minister and football authorities to begin talks with England star Callum Hudson Odoi over the possibility of switching to play for the West African country.
This comes after the Chelsea star, who was born to Ghanaian parents in England, paid a courtesy visit to the leader of the West African state on Monday night while visiting the country on holidays.
Hudson-Odoi, whose father is a former Ghana international and a Hearts of Oak star Bismark Odoi, can switch nationality to play for the Black Stars despite playing for the England national team in recent times.
The talented winger has been a long-time target for Ghana for a nationality switch and with the country’s President now ordering for the sports minister to start engaging the player, the hunt for the England star will truly take off.
The Chelsea star visited the country’s leader in his elder brother Bradley Hudson-Odoi and the Ghana Sports Minister Honourable Mustapha Usif at the seat of government called the Jubilee House.
He presented his customized jersey to the Ghana leader before Akufo-Addo asked the Sports Minister to begin the process to convince him to play for the West African country.
“On Monday, 7th June 2021, Ghanaian-born Chelsea footballer, Callum Hudson-Odoi, paid a courtesy call on me at Jubilee House, the seat of our nation’s presidency,” President Akufo-Addo wrote on Monday night.
“Amongst others, I urged the Minister for Youth and Sports to explore the possibility of having Callum switch nationality, and play for the Black Stars.”
FIFA rules state that Hudson-Odoi would be able to represent Ghana in the future, as he has not played more than three senior matches for England.
Those games all came before he turned 21 as is required, but he would need to wait to make an application until three years after his last appearance for England.
That came on November 17 in 2019, so theoretically Hudson-Odoi could make the application on the same date in 2022, which would be shortly before the World Cup got underway.
England will be hoping the youngster doesn’t follow the lead of other players to have turned their back on representing them recently, most notably Jamal Musiala.
The 18-year-old played for the Three Lions at Under 17 and Under 21 level, but pledged his future to Germany in February after the two countries battled to secure his services.
Wilfried Zaha turned his back on England in favour of Ivory Coast after feeling he was not getting the opportunities he deserved, and in a 2018 interview revealed he had no regrets over his decision.
