Ghana’s Black Stars coach, Chris Hughton, has stated that he cannot predict whether Ghana’s four-decade-long trophy drought will end during his tenure. At his unveiling in Kumasi on March 20, 2023, Hughton emphasized that winning trophies is a gradual process, and he cannot currently say that the Black Stars are in a favorable position to achieve this goal.
Hughton’s primary objective is to develop a team that can compete and qualify for tournaments, but he refrains from offering false promises by stating explicitly that he can win trophies with the Black Stars. Hughton outlined his objectives for the team and expressed his hope that the team will eventually achieve something significant for Ghanaians.

During his unveiling, Hughton declared that no coach can guarantee a trophy. He emphasized that it all begins with qualifications and that while he knows what he can do, he cannot guarantee a trophy. Hughton stated that the team has short, medium, and long-term objectives, and in the short term, their goal is to win football games to improve their chances of winning.
Hughton expressed his satisfaction with the Ghana Football Association’s contract’s duration, stating that it is the right one for him. He also discussed the future of Arsenal midfielder, Thomas Partey, in the team, indicating that he is impressed with the player’s role in the team. He explained that Partey’s role is vital to the team’s success, even if he does not always stand out. Hughton urged Ghanaians not to compare Partey’s performance for Arsenal and the national team, as he plays distinct roles for both entities.
Hughton further disclosed during his unveiling that he will pay attention to the Ghana Premier League and give selections to players who impress. His first game as the Black Stars coach will be against Angola on March 23.
