President Akufo-Addo has expressed his perplexity at Ghana’s recent underperformance in major football tournaments, despite the abundance of talent in the country.
The Black Stars have faced disappointment in the last two significant competitions, being unable to progress beyond the first round. Their early exits occurred at the group stages of the 2021 Africa Cup of Nations in January 2022 and the 2022 World Cup in December of the same year. This was coupled with a round of 16 exit at the 2019 Africa Cup of Nations in Egypt.
During a meeting with the Executive Council of the Ghana Football Association on Wednesday, President Akufo-Addo highlighted the crucial importance of optimal preparation for the upcoming 2023 Africa Cup of Nations in Ivory Coast, which is set to commence in just 23 days.
In his address, the President, an ardent football fan, acknowledged the challenges faced by the national team, citing the unsatisfactory results in recent games. He assured the Executive Council of his unwavering support, stating, “We have some very good talents scattered across the globe, so I don’t understand why we shouldn’t perform well in tournaments.”
