Legendary Ghanaian footballer Asamoah Gyan has disclosed that he used to lobby the Ghana Football Association to send Black Stars matches to Kumasi.
According to Asamoah Gyan, while Kumasi has rightfully earned the tag of the ‘spiritual home’ of Ghana football and therefore deserved to host Ghana games, he often appealed to the GFA to send games there due to his love for Kumasi Asante Kotoko and the people of Asanteman.
“Because I love the club, I made sure that we played Ghana matches here,” Gyan said repeatedly on Pure FM, referring to Kumasi.
Gyan made the revelation during a heated but friendly banter with his elder brother Baffour Gyan over which one of them loves Asante Kotoko more.
During the interview, Baffour Gyan poked his younger brother by introducing what appears to be a regular topic of banter between the Ghanaian football stars.
Baffour Gyan, who was responding to a question on why they decided to launch the All Regional Games in Kumasi, digressed by bringing up the topic of which one of them loves Kotoko more.
In the view of Baffour Gyan, the biggest demonstration of love anyone could show Asanteman and Asante Kotoko is by playing for the club, and he achieved that.
Asamoah Gyan, on the other hand, conceded that not playing for Asante Kotoko is a blot on his stellar football record, but that does not, in his view, negate the fact that he loves Asante Kotoko more than his elder brother.
Asamoah Gyan said he demonstrated his love by lobbying the Ghana Football Association to send Black Stars games to Kumasi during his era as skipper.
While the two brothers have always spoken of their innate love for Asante Kotoko, Baffour is the one who achieved the dream of playing for his boyhood club.
At the twilight of his career, Baffour Gyan played for Asante Kotoko in the 2011/2012 season.
