Francis Andy Kumi, a former striker for Asante Kotoko, has opened up about the challenges he faced during his time with the Ghanaian club. The 24-year-old player joined Kotoko from UniStar but spent only one season with the former Ghana Premier League champions before moving on to Bechem United at the start of the last season.
Andy Kumi revealed that his struggles at Kotoko were largely due to internal factors, particularly the actions of his own teammates. He explained that during his first week of training, he felt some nervousness and apprehension due to the reputation of Kotoko and the presence of established players in the team. However, he believed in his abilities and thought he could compete with them.
Initially, he managed to score one or two goals, but he claimed that some of his teammates began undermining his progress by making negative comments. They allegedly said that when strikers come to Kotoko and start scoring, they receive praise but eventually leave the club. These remarks had a negative impact on his confidence and made it difficult for him to perform at his best and find scoring opportunities.
Despite the challenges he faced at Kotoko, Andy Kumi had a successful stint with Kotoku Royals in the most recent season, scoring 12 goals for the Akyem-based club. He has recently made a move to Serbia, signing a three-year contract with Radnicki Nis.
