Hassan Ayariga, the Founder of the All People’s Congress (APC), has made a promise to eradicate sports betting in Ghana if he is elected as the President of the country.
Sports betting has seen a significant increase in popularity in Ghana in recent years, and the government even introduced a 10% withholding tax on betting, games, and lottery winnings through the Ghana Revenue Authority (GRA).
Ayariga expressed his concern that high unemployment rates are driving the youth to engage in sports betting. He pledged to eliminate the practice and make it illegal if he becomes the president.
He stated, “I will cancel betting because betting is an avenue for lazy people. Why do you bet? Because they have no jobs. I will cancel betting, [and make it] illegal in my country.
What do you mean by betting when I need young people like them to sit behind computers and design things and build a country where we have the highest technology in Ghana and the world?”
Hassan Ayariga ran as a presidential aspirant in the 2020 elections.
