India’s Supreme Court has ruled adultery should no longer be a criminal offence.
Chief Justice Dipak Misra said, “adultery can be groud for civil issues including dissolution of marriage but it cannot be a criminal offence.”
Furthermore, he added that the 158-year law discriminates against women, saying “treating women with indignity or discrimination invites the wrath of the constitution”.
Currently, no data is available to indicate the number of men who have been jailed since the law was made almost two centuries ago.
The law was changed after a petitioner challenged it in court as only men were charged under the law.
