The time for the opposition NDC to elect a flagbearer to lead the party is getting closer and closer.
Last week, the General Secretary of the party, Johnson Asiedu Nketiah announce that all interested persons can pick a form and file for their nomination.
Though other people have made it known they are interested in leading the NDC and are optimistic they can win power for the NDC, it looks like the race is between former President, John Mahama and the rest.
Prof Joshua Alabi, Dr Spio Garbrah, Sylvester Mensah and Alban Bagbin have all made their intention of leading the party known but their popularity cannot be compared to that of the former president.
Dr Spio Garbrah lost to the late President Mills before the 2008 elections but since Mahama took over, his popularity has overshadowed any other person in the party including that of the founder, Jerry John Rawlings.
But is he, the only hope for the NDC?
Mahama lost the 2016 election by over 1 million votes and became the first Ghanaian sitting President to lose an election.
Since losing the election, it has always been clear that Mahama will contest again.
The unity walks the party has been organizing at the regional levels seem to be more about Mahama than about uniting the party.
After every unity walk, comments made by Mahama about the ruling government makes wave more than any other thing.
At every Unity Walk, Mahama is more pushed to the frontline than any other person in the party.
Not too long ago, it was revealed that the NDC MPs are rooting for Mahama but this news was cut short by some NDC MPs who said they did not know anything about it.
They indicated they were not even aware of what they were signing and stated emphatically not all of them support John Mahama.
Though we cannot trust delegates, no one will be surprised if Mahama becomes the flagbearer for the NDC.
Comparing him to his opponents in terms of popularity across the country, he is way ahead of them and it will be easy for the image of the party should he lead them.
But will Ghanaians accept him and vote for him to lead the country again?
As a President, he could not get 45% and now that he is in opposition too, what exactly can he do to win the seat?
These are the question that needs to be answered but as at now, it is likely that he is the only hope for the National Democratic Congress.
