Super Eagles midfielder, Alex Iwobi, recently shared a quirky behind-the-scenes story about how his documentary plans for the 2022 FIFA World Cup qualifiers were abruptly disrupted by Ghana’s deputy captain, Thomas Partey.
Iwobi, who was suspended for Ghana’s playoff game against Nigeria, revealed that he had been recording a video of himself watching the second leg of the playoffs as he hoped to capture the celebrations of Nigeria’s qualification.

In his own words, Iwobi explained the situation, saying, “I couldn’t even go to play against Ghana because I had a red card in AFCON. I was fuming. I was watching with my boys at home thinking like yeah, we’re going to leak something. We were watching like trying to create a documentary because we’re thinking, ‘This is our opportunity… we’re gonna get there..’ Then Thomas Partey bagged that goal. So I remember in my house, it was just like this (silent).”
The first leg of the playoff had ended in a goalless draw in Kumasi, Ghana, setting up an intense return leg in Abuja with everything to play for.
The highly anticipated second leg, which unfolded on March 29, 2022, ended in a 1-1 draw. This result meant that Ghana secured qualification to the World Cup, thanks to the away goal rule.
