English striker, Jamie Richard Vardy has retired from international football.
The 31-year old Leicester City striker scored 7 goals in 26 appearances for the Three Lions from 2015 to 2017. He represented his country at the 2016 Euros in France and the 2018 FIFA World Cup in Russia.
He scored his first goal in a friendly against Germany in Berlin on 26 March 2016.
Vardy has cited lack of playing time in the national team as well as focusing on his club career as the reasons for his retirement.
In the just ended World Cup in Russia, Vardy started only one game as Harry Kane was the preferred choice upfront.
He told Gareth Southgate of his intention to retire from international football after the World Cup and reaffirmed his decision in a telephone call with the English coach yesterday.
“To be honest with you, this has been on my mind for a while. I’m not getting any younger and you can see, to be fair to the gaffer, he wants to make it more youthful, which obviously had its benefits during the World Cup – we got to the semi-finals and finished fourth, which is equal to the furthest we have ever been on foreign soil. So I just said to Gareth that I think it’s probably best from now on, especially with the way he wants to go, to bring youngsters in who he thinks have got the ability and start nurturing them into international football,” he told the Guardian after his retirement.
