Dr. Mahamudu Bawumia, the Vice President of Ghana, has stated that the Kumasi Kejetia Market fire was caused by human error. The fire reportedly started when a trader attempted to cook food using a gas cooker in one of the shops.
Dr. Bawumia visited the market on Monday, March 20, 2021, along with a delegation that included the Director General of NADMO, Nana Agyemang Prempeh, Minority leader Osei Kyei Mensah Bonsu, Energy Minister Dr. Mathew Opoku Prempeh, Fred Oware, and others, to obtain first-hand information about the inferno. During the visit, he assured the traders of the government’s support to help them resume their business activities.
The Vice President has also announced that the market, which was initially closed to the public for one week after the fire incident, will be opened for trading activities starting from Tuesday, March 21, 2023. He urged all stakeholders to remain calm and wait for the government’s support.
A delegation from the ruling New Patriotic Party (NPP), led by the General Secretary of the party, donated GHc100,000 to the victims. Nana Kwasi Prempeh, who spoke on behalf of the Kejetia traders, commended the Vice President for his intervention in the closure of the market.
