On Monday, April 17, 2023, the Narcotics Control Commission (NACOC) reported that they had arrested a Kenyan woman at the Kotoka International Airport for attempting to smuggle cocaine into the country.
The woman, identified as 35-year-old Njeri Mary, was apprehended on Saturday, April 15, 2023, during routine checks after she arrived at the airport on a South African Airways flight from Nairobi to Accra via Johannesburg.
In a statement released by the Commission, Njeri Mary was found to be carrying 11.04 kilogrammes of cocaine worth Three Hundred and Nine Thousand One Hundred and Twenty United States Dollars ($309,120). The drugs were concealed in food packages that were discovered in her luggage. After preliminary questioning, the suspect admitted to being in possession of the drugs and was subsequently arrested for further investigation.
The cocaine has since been sent to the Ghana Standard Authority for analysis, while the suspect remains in prison pending further investigations and prosecution.
