Fear and panic have gripped the residents of Effutu Woarabeba, a fishing community nestled in the Central Region, as a close call with a potentially tragic incident unfolded. More than ten Kindergarten pupils were narrowly saved from the perilous grip of strong waves in a lagoon while returning from school.
Reports suggest that as the children reached the lagoon near their community, their older siblings decided to guide them across. Tragically, they were all caught off guard by a sudden and powerful tidal wave surging from the lagoon. In the ensuing chaos, they found themselves immersed in the water, struggling to stay afloat.
Thankfully, a quick-thinking Youth Leader from the community noticed the dire situation and bravely swam to their rescue, pulling them to safety and averting a potential catastrophe.
It was noted that the lagoon had not been filled to its brim in the morning when the pupils had set off for school. However, the situation took a dramatic turn due to heavy rainfall, causing the water level to rise significantly by the time the children returned home.
In an interview with Kasapa News, residents expressed their concerns over the lack of a school in the Woarabeba Community. Children from this community are compelled to cover considerable distances to attend school at Esuekyire, a suburb of Winneba within the Effutu Municipality of the Central Region. This long journey puts the young students at risk, as demonstrated by this recent incident.
The residents voiced their frustration with the government’s failure to provide a school in their community, emphasizing the need for accessible and safe education facilities.
The Chief of Woarabeba Community, Nenyi Kow Abowie II, shared an alarming revelation. He disclosed that a significant number of children in the community have abandoned formal education due to the immense distance they must traverse to reach school. During the rainy season, they are forced to stay home, unable to embark on the long and perilous journey to school.
In light of these concerns, Chief Nenyi Kow Abowie II appealed to the Municipal Chief Executive and the Member of Parliament for Effutu, Alexander Afenyo Markin, to intervene by establishing a public school in the community. The aim is to prevent any potential calamities and to ensure that the innocent pupils can safely access education.
These pleas were made during the climax of the 2023 Tweii Festival at Woarabeba, a significant event for the community.
In response to these urgent requests, the Municipal Chief Executive for Effutu Municipality, Hon. Alhaji Kasim Zubairu, urged the traditional authorities to provide land for the construction of the much-needed school, signaling hope for a brighter and safer educational future for the children of Woarabeba.
