A 26-year-old trader was arrested for allegedly attempting to sell a locally manufactured pistol with three cartridges at the Achimota Charcoal Station. The accused, Prince Atakorah, also known as Kofi Atakorah, claimed that the pistol belonged to his late father and that he had taken it from his room in Asante Mampong. He further stated that he was attempting to sell it in order to pay his wife’s hospital bills.
Atakorah pleaded not guilty to the charge of possession of firearms without lawful authority in front of the Accra Circuit Court, presided over by Mr. Isaac Addo.
The court granted Atakorah bail in the amount of GHC20,000 and required two sureties to justify the bail.
According to Chief Inspector Josephine Lamptey, who led the prosecution, the complainants in the case were police officers stationed at the Greater Accra Regional Police Command. Atakorah resides at the Achimota Charcoal Station in Accra.
The prosecution explained that on October 12, 2023, the Regional Police Command received information that Atakorah was in possession of a locally manufactured pistol and was attempting to sell it. In response to the complaint, the police went to the Achimota Charcoal Station and arrested Atakorah with the pistol and three cartridges. During questioning, Atakorah admitted to possessing the locally manufactured pistol and the three cartridges.
