In a startling incident at the Obuasi Central Market in the Ashanti Region of Ghana, a young man hailing from Mankessim in the Central Region was apprehended for stealing ‘koobi,’ a beloved salted fish delicacy in the country. The suspected thief, identified as Paa Yaw, had traveled to Obuasi with hopes of finding work but ended up engaging in criminal activity.
The incident came to light when a lady named Wendy Akuffo posted a video of the theft and subsequent arrest on Facebook, which quickly went viral. Koobi is a popular ingredient used in many Ghanaian soups and stews, making it a valuable commodity in the local market.
According to reports, a night watchman patrolling the market came across Paa Yaw in the act of stealing the koobi. The watchman, equipped with a locally made security weapon, managed to overpower the thief and seize the stolen koobi from him. Paa Yaw had reportedly attempted to escape by jumping from a storey building, but he was caught in the act.
Interestingly, the alleged thief had come prepared with a modern, multiple-zipped bag to hold his stolen goods, but he only managed to get his hands on the koobi, which he stashed in a polythene bag. It remains unclear if the salted fish was his main target or if he settled for it after failing to find more valuable items.
The video showed Paa Yaw tied to a pole attached to a stall with heavy chains and a padlock, awaiting action by market authorities. He was suspected to be part of a notorious gang known for robbing markets in the Obuasi township.
Early on Thursday, July 2023, Paa Yaw was handed over to the police for further investigation into the matter. The police are likely to look into the alleged thief’s involvement in the reported market robberies and gather evidence for potential charges against him.
