A case involving a 23-year-old man, Ebenezer Sarfo, who allegedly shared an intimate video of his ex-girlfriend with multiple contacts on WhatsApp, was brought before the Adentan Circuit Court. It was reported that Sarfo had warned his ex-girlfriend about his intentions to circulate the video before carrying out the act.
Sarfo, who is currently unemployed, pleaded not guilty to charges of non-consensual sharing of an intimate image and sexual extortion. During the court proceedings presided over by Mrs. Sedinam Awo Balokah, Sarfo was granted bail in the amount of GHC300,000. The bail conditions included three sureties, one of whom was required to be justified. Additionally, Sarfo was ordered to report to the police every Wednesday. The court adjourned the matter to August 2.
The prosecution, led by Chief Inspector Maxwell Lanyo, provided details of the case. The complainant, whose identity was withheld, resided in Madina, while the accused, Sarfo, resided in Ofinso. The prosecution revealed that the complainant and Sarfo had been involved in a long-distance relationship, with occasional visits by the complainant.
According to the prosecution, during the course of their relationship, Sarfo convinced the complainant to participate in a video call where she was naked. Unbeknownst to her, Sarfo secretly recorded the call, capturing her fully nude. The relationship eventually deteriorated, causing discontent for Sarfo.
Following the breakup, Sarfo began threatening the complainant, using her nude video as leverage to coerce her into unwanted sexual activities. On May 28, 2023, while the complainant was en route to Oyibi to visit her family, Sarfo sent her a WhatsApp message stating, “Do you know I have your nude videos? If you leave me, I will distribute it on social media.” Later that day, around 3:00 PM, Sarfo shared the nude video with a friend of the complainant, who also served as a witness in the case.
Upon being alerted by her friend, the complainant confronted Sarfo about the video. In response, Sarfo became enraged and proceeded to share the explicit video with his other contacts through various WhatsApp platforms. On May 30, 2023, the complainant reported the incident to the police, leading to Sarfo’s arrest in Offinso. He was subsequently brought to the Oyibi Police Station.
The case will continue to unfold as it progresses through the judicial system, with the hope that justice will be served for the victim of this distressing incident.
