Solomon Nkansah, the individual arrested for allegedly cutting down the revered Komfo Anokye tree in Feyiase, is still in police custody as he has been unable to meet the GH₵20,000 bail set by the court. Despite the court granting bail with a surety from the Atasemanso Circuit Court, Nkansah remains incarcerated almost two weeks after the court’s decision.
During his second court appearance on Thursday, November 23, prosecutors requested an extension to conduct further investigations and explore potential accomplices in the case. The court, presided over by Justice Gloria Mensah-Bonsu, granted the request and postponed the case to December 5.
Following the felling of the celebrated 300-year-old kola tree in Feyiase, known for its reputed healing properties, authorities initiated a manhunt for the perpetrators. The kola tree had significant historical and cultural importance in the Ashanti Kingdom, as it was believed to have sprouted from a kola nut spat out by the revered priest Komfo Anokye in the early 1700s.
The tree, located along a major road connecting Kumasi to Lake Bosomtwe, had managed to avoid removal during highway construction and had become a cherished tourist attraction. The public expressed outrage when images circulated online of the toppled tree. The reasons behind its felling remain unclear.
The site of the Battle of Feyiase, a crucial historical event in the Ashanti Kingdom’s fight for independence against the Denkyira Kingdom, is located at the same spot. The Komfo Anokye tree’s presence over the years has played a significant role in connecting the historical narrative and cultural heritage of the Ashanti Kingdom and its people.
