Today marked exactly 17 years since the May 9 tragedy happened at the Accra Sports Stadium.
The event which led to the death of 127 people happened during a football match between Accra Hearts of Oak and Kumasi Asante Kotoko ending 2-1 in favour of Hearts of Oak.
The disappointed Kotoko fans started throwing plastic bottles and seats onto the pitch. Stampede occurred after police responded by throwing tear gas into the crowd. The gates were locked when fans tried to leave the stadium.
Herbert Mensah, who was the Chairman of Kotoko has said we should remember the day.
‘We tend not to remember our heroes here in Ghana and as Chairman of Kotoko at the time is one of the world’s worst tragedies in a stadium. And I think that is only befitting that we Ghanaians we celebrate, we remember the day.’
‘People have lost lives, families have suffered and people have moved on. If its 1, 2, 3 a road crash 10, 5, we mourn and we are sad. But a 127 people passing away is a serious indictment on all of us. And I don’t think this day, May 9, should be forgotten, ever.’
This year, they used the day to help people at Komfo Anokye Teaching Hospital’s pediatric hospital.
Donations were made to pay the bills of those who could not afford to pay it.
