In Ghana, it is a norm for a Municipal or District Chief Executive to give Assembly members something before they vote for him or her in an election. Although no one has ever been caught red-handed buying votes, that is what we always hear happens.
One MCE nominee was not lucky as the Assemblymen voted against him after each member took ₵2000 from him.
Narrating his story, Martin Obeng Adjei told Angel FM in Sunyani that the Assemblymen asked him to pay ₵3000, however, he negotiated with them as the amount was too high for him. According to him, the members agreed to take ₵2000 each.
Martin Obeng Adjei said he took money from some of his friends to come up with the ₵54,000 needed to be shared among the Assembly members.
Unfortunately for him, only 12 people voted for him after the 27 people promised to vote for him.
“They told me they have not heard anything bad about me and so they believe Nana Addo has appointed the right man”, he said.
Martin Obeng Adjei who was nominated to head Berekum West highest political office said he first met with the NDC caucus at the Assembly before meeting those in his own party.
He indicated after agreeing on the fee with the Assemblymen who are NDC members, those in his party did not ask anything but indirectly they wanted the same as what he was giving to the NDC.
After losing the election, he said the Assembly members with “guilty conscience” have told him they will give him back his money.
