Lionel Messi scored twice to reach 600 goals in his club career as Barcelona beat Liverpool 3-0 in the first leg of their Champions League semifinals clash at Camp Nou.
Barcelona took the lead in the 26th minute when ex-Liverpool star Luis Suarez poked in his first Champions League goal since April 2018 off Jordi Alba’s low pass to the centre of the box.
Liverpool’s best first-half chance came when Jordan Henderson connected with Sadio Mane on a perfect pass ahead of Gerard Pique and Clement Lenglet, only for the Senegalese to sail the strike in the stands.
Following the break, the Engish side pressed for the equaliser, but Barcelona goalkeeper Marc-Andre Ter Stegen made two key stops off strikes from Mohamed Salah and James Milner.
But Barcelona doubled their lead in the 75th minute when Messi tapped in the rebound after Suarez’s close-range shot off his knee bounced off the bar.
Messi then reached the 600-goal mark on a curling screamer off a free kick into the top corner that Liverpool goalkeeper Alisson had little chance of stopping.
The return leg is next Wednesday at Anfield.
