Ghanaian football icon Charles Taylor has raised concerns about the priorities of local players called up to the Black Stars, suggesting that their focus on photo opportunities and financial gains may hinder their genuine competition with foreign-based counterparts.
Taylor expressed his observations, noting that despite some local players receiving Black Stars call-ups in the past seven years, their impact has been limited due to a lack of opportunities. He emphasized that a significant issue is the mindset of certain local players, who, when called up, seem more focused on financial gains, taking pictures with senior players, and announcing their presence on social media, rather than concentrating on the competition aspect.
“In the last seven years, although few local players have received Black Stars call-ups, we do not see their impact because they are not given opportunities. A key problem of many local players is when they are called, they are focused on money, taking pictures with the other senior players and announcing on social media that they were also present, which shouldn’t be their main goal,” Taylor remarked during an interview on Happy FM.
While acknowledging the positive developments in the local league, Taylor emphasized the necessity for a shift in mindset among local players aspiring to join the Black Stars. He urged them to prioritize the opportunity to represent the national team over financial gains and social media recognition.
In contrast, Ghana coach Chris Hughton has included 11 home-based players in the 55-man provisional squad for the upcoming tournament, signaling an effort to provide opportunities for local talents to contribute significantly to the Black Stars.
