Dr. Kwame Kyei the former Board Chairman of Asante has strongly criticized the disturbing behavior exhibited by some Asante Kotoko fans during the club’s 2-2 draw against Nations FC on matchday six of the 2023/2024 Ghana Premier League.
Dr. Kyei whose sons own Nations FC expressed his deep connection with Kotoko and also voiced his disapproval of the fans’ actions, particularly the vandalism of stadium seats. He stressed that such actions were unwarranted and detrimental to the country’s development.
“Kotoko is my team, and I can’t deny that anywhere. But what happened yesterday was not good. Even if something happened and you are not happy with it, you should have let the law take its course. But throwing water sachets and vandalizing the seats doesn’t contribute to the development of the country,” he said.
Dr. Kyei also pointed out that such actions set a poor example and could potentially inspire others to engage in similar behavior. He emphasized the importance of preserving the facilities, stating, “What I have done could inspire someone else to do the same, but if we destroy the facilities, where are we heading? It wasn’t good, but let’s not point fingers or blame anyone, including the police.”
He urged the media to help put this incident behind and pledged to repair the damages since the stadium belongs to Kotoko. He expressed hope that such behavior would not be repeated, concluding, “For me, whatever has happened, I plead that we let it go. It is only the seats that have been destroyed, which we will replace with new ones. The stadium belongs to Kotoko because everything on this soil is for Asantehene…Yes, we have condemned the act, and I plead with the media to let it go. I also plead that it will not happen again.”
The fans’ destructive actions transpired in response to a controversial referee decision during Kotoko’s away game on Sunday, October 22, 2023, which eventually ended in a 2-2 draw.
