Tragedy struck in the north-western part of Nigeria as fifteen children drowned and 25 others went missing when the boat they were commuting with capsized on the Shagari River.
The children were on their way to collect firewood on Tuesday, May 9, 2023, when their overloaded vessel overturned.
According to Aliyu Abubakar, a political administrator of the Shagari district who supervised the rescue operation, local rescue teams were able to recover the bodies of 13 girls and 2 boys, which were buried afterward.
The incident highlights the dangers faced by children and locals who rely on boats as their primary mode of transportation in Nigeria’s waterways, particularly when the vessels are overloaded.
