Nigerian Twitter users recently took on the organizers of Italy’s top-flight league, Serie A, for naming Khvicha Kvaratskhelia as Napoli’s best player for the season. Serie A posted a photo of Argentine legend Maradona crowning Kvaratskhelia, indicating that he was the club’s top player for the season. However, within an hour of the post, Nigerians began tweeting an edited version of the photo with Maradona crowning Nigerian international Victor Osimhen instead.
Osimhen has been one of Napoli’s most influential players this season, having scored 27 goals and provided 4 assists so far. In contrast, Kvaratskhelia has 14 goals and 14 assists. Osimhen’s recent goal against Udinese secured Napoli a draw and the league trophy for the first time in 33 years, making him a deserving candidate for the club’s best player award.
Nigerians on Twitter were quick to point this out and express their disagreement with the choice of Kvaratskhelia as the best player. Osimhen’s impressive performances throughout the season, including his crucial goal in the final match, have made him a fan favorite and earned him the recognition he deserves.
