A 24-year-old nursing mother, Mary Tawiah, has been arrested by the Domestic Violence and Victim Support Unit (DOVVSU) of the Kasoa Divisional Police Command for allegedly attempting to poison her own child.
The disturbing incident reportedly occurred on June 30, 2025, at the Kasoa Old Market in the Awutu Senya East Municipality of the Central Region.
According to a report by adomonline.com, the suspect, who resides in Teshie with her boyfriend, Kobby Nbelenbele, had followed him to Kasoa after he allegedly abandoned her and their child to be with another woman.
An eyewitness, Felix Dakwa, stated that Mary confronted Kobby and his alleged new partner at the market, leading to a heated argument.
In the heat of the moment, Mary allegedly threatened to poison their child and then produced a substance from her bag, attempting to force it into the boy’s mouth.
The attempt was thwarted by the swift intervention of bystanders, who restrained her and subsequently handed her over to the police.
Both Mary Tawiah and Kobby Nbelenbele are currently in police custody, assisting with investigations.
DOVVSU is expected to prioritise the welfare of the child while the investigation proceeds.
