Well, have you ever wondered why the male sex organ is called kɔteɛ in Akan?
We all know that our forefathers had a reason for naming everything so do not be surprised with what you are going to find out about how the male sex organ got its name.
The penis, as the English man calls it is very important to every man. Without it, well it will be difficult for women to see one as a man.
As we all know men cannot do anything without women and for a man to bear forth children he must have sex with a woman. The sex, our forefathers believed is the only means through which a man can get the power he needs. Yes, men complain about how worrying women are yet for a man to be complete, he must find a woman.
As the saying goes, ‘behind every successful man, there is a woman’ meaning it is through a woman that a man can be able to achieve or do something in life. It is through a woman that a man can be blessed. In Proverbs 3:18 (NIV) it is written, ‘she is a tree of life to those who take hold of her; to those who hold her fast will be blessed.’
Proverbs 3:18 New International Version (NIV)
18 She is a tree of life to those who take hold of her;
those who hold her fast will be blessed.
Therefore for a man to be blessed through the tree of life (woman), he must go thus ‘kɔ’ and pluck thus ‘te’ the power or ability to do something in life from the woman. So while the man uses the male sex organ to go and pluck (kɔte) the power from a woman, our forefathers used the process used in getting the power to name the organ.
So, from our oral history, this is how the male sex organ became known as kɔteɛ.
It must also be noted that there may be another oral history that tells how it manhood got its local. If you know any other story, let us know about yours. You can log in and comment or sent an email to info@thepostghana.com
