The Office of the Special Prosecutor (OSP) in Ghana has declared Charles Bissue, the former secretary to the Inter-Ministerial Committee on Illegal Mining (IMCIM), as wanted. In a notice shared on social media, the OSP stated that Bissue is wanted for corruption-related offenses and the misuse of public office for profit in relation to his work on the dissolved IMCIM.
The alleged offenses include issues pertaining to the activities and expenditure of the IMCIM, particularly concerning the seizure and management of excavators, machinery, road vehicles, and gold nuggets. The OSP had previously secured a warrant for Bissue’s arrest.
Earlier, on May 16, 2023, the former chairman of IMCIM and former Minister of Science and Technology, Prof Kwabena Frimpong-Boateng, was arrested by the OSP in connection with corruption allegations related to the IMCIM’s work. He was later granted a GH¢2 million bail by the OSP.
Prof Frimpong-Boateng had been invited by the OSP to assist in an ongoing investigation into corruption-related matters based on a report he spearheaded on small-scale mining activities in the country. He had previously made allegations of attempts to frustrate his work and sabotage him during his tenure as chair of the IMCIM.
The investigations conducted by the OSP aim to shed light on suspected corruption and corruption-related offenses regarding the activities and expenditure of the dissolved IMCIM. Prof Frimpong-Boateng expressed his willingness to cooperate with the OSP and support their work in addressing these issues.
The case involving Charles Bissue and the investigations into the IMCIM’s activities are ongoing, with the next hearing scheduled for a later date.
