For many years, the culture of maintenance in Ghana has been a source of concern, compounded by a historical narrative marred by incomplete evidence, half-truths, and misinformation, depending on the storyteller.
The Osu Castle stands as one of Ghana’s enduring architectural structures with a rich and complex history. Despite its dark past, where it witnessed significant historical events, the castle has served various purposes over the years, hosting missionaries, governors, monarchs, and past Ghanaian Presidents.
However, the present state of this historic building, which has been unused for several years, reflects a stark contrast to its once grandeur, as it is now suffering from neglect and decay.
Images shared by Koku Anyidoho, the former Deputy General Secretary of the National Democratic Congress (NDC), depict a scene of disarray within one of the rooms at the Osu Castle. The photographs reveal destroyed furniture, which once played a crucial role in hosting meetings for presidents, as well as broken floors, doors, ceilings, and walls infested with fungus.
Expressing his dismay at the current state of the Osu Castle, Koku Anyidoho shared the images on the X platform on December 24, 2023, reminiscing about the places and furniture that were once integral to the historical building. The Osu Castle served as the seat of various governments under the 4th republic until 2021.
