Ghana Football Association (GFA) presidential aspirant, George Afriyie has promised to ensure that should he become the president of the association he will make sure that the players earn at least $1000 a month.
The former Vice President of the GFA said some clubs are already paying some players $1000 but people do not know about it because the media does not research into it.
The move, he added, will stop players from going to countries like Tanzania or Iraq to receive $1500.
“Already some clubs are paying $1000.”
“What is the salary of Sogne Yacouba, what is the salary of Adebayor in Inter Allies?”
According to him, Liberty Professionals was paying Gambian International, Ibrahim Camara and other foreign players $1000, therefore, if the foreigners are being paid such amount, the Ghanaians must also be paid that way.
Afriyie delineated that his administration will do everything they can to attract more sponsors so that they can implement the policy.
“We will try and attract more sponsorships. This is the only way we retain our stars from going to Zambia, from going Tanzania,” he said.
If we can pay “Samuel Sarfo of Liberty Professionals $1000 why would he go to Iraq for $1500?”
“I know 4-5 years ago Ash Gold was paying some players $500” he said so if we attract more sponsors in the league we will be able to implement the policy.
Afriyie has been lauded for the policy as most players leave the country due to the low salaries. Apart from players playing for Kotoko, some players are paid ₵250 ($45) a month. While one might think this is small and easy for the clubs to pay, at times some players do not get paid for months.
This has affected the quality of the Ghanaian league as the clubs are unable to retain their players.
