The Ghana Police Service has confirmed the arrest of coach Napari Suheru for assaulting a referee during a Division 1B football match near the Aliu Mahama Sports Stadium in Tamale on June 17, 2023. The referee sustained injuries and was promptly taken to the hospital for medical treatment.
The suspect, coach Napari Suheru, is currently in police custody and will face legal proceedings in court to answer for his actions. The Police have launched an investigation into the incident to gather additional information.
In response to the assault, the Inspector-General of Police, Dr. George Akuffo Dampare, held discussions with Kurt Okraku, the President of the Ghana Football Association, and Professor Peter Twumasi, the Director-General of the National Sports Authority. The meeting focused on the importance of enhancing security measures and maintaining law and order during lower-league football matches.
Dr. Dampare emphasized the need for both officials to inform the Police in advance of all football matches in the lower leagues, similar to the protocol followed for premier league matches. This proactive approach will allow the Police to deploy adequate security measures to ensure the safety and well-being of all participants and maintain a conducive environment for the matches.
