The Ghanaian Police Administration has announced that it has arrested key suspects in connection with the murder of soldier, Sheriff Imoro, in Ashaiman. The suspects were apprehended through a sustained intelligence-led operation. A press release issued by the police on Friday confirmed the arrests, stating that “the Police after a week of sustained intelligence-led operation have arrested the key suspects involved in the murder of Imoro Sherrif, the soldier who was found dead at Taifa Ashiaman on 4th March, 2023.”
The murder of the soldier, which occurred on Saturday, March 4, 2023, caused outrage among the military. In response, military personnel invaded Ashaiman on Tuesday, March 7, in a bid to find the perpetrators of the heinous crime. Some residents were reportedly brutalized during the operation, and a number were taken in for questioning. Most of them have since been released as of Friday.
The Member of Parliament for the area condemned the military’s actions, saying that “we cannot take the laws into our hands whether we are lawmakers or security agencies.” The Ghana Armed Forces, however, clarified that the operation was not a revenge mission, but rather a swoop in a manhunt for criminals. The operation led to the arrest of approximately 184 suspects between the ages of 21 and 47 years old. They have since been handed over to the military police and will subsequently be sent to the Ghana Police Service for screening and further action.
In related news, the Minister of Defense, Dominic Nitiwul, expressed his regret over the incident, stating that it is always difficult to ensure absolute peace in shaping a nation. He also announced that the Defense and Interior Committee of Parliament, together with the Ministry of Defense and the Military High Command, will visit the Ashaiman community on Thursday, March 16.
