In the town of Nyinahin, located in the Ashanti region of Atwima Mponua, a shocking incident has unfolded, leading to the arrest of a police corporal for alleged theft and property damage.
The accused, Corporal Lansah Umar, who was on leave from his duty station in Asaam near Mampong, stands accused of breaking into his colleague’s house and stealing several bags of cement, with the assistance of an accomplice.
The incident took place in the Twere Nyame neighborhood of Nyinahin late in the evening on Monday, June 10. A vigilant resident noticed something unusual and quickly alerted the neighbors around 11 pm.
Reportedly, Corporal Umar, together with a 25-year-old tricycle rider named Mohammed Seidu, used a pickaxe to forcefully break through the security door of a room where Sergeant John Opoku Agyemang, a police driver on night duty, stored 200 bags of cement.
Startled by the arrival of a police night patrol team, summoned by concerned neighbors, the two perpetrators hastily fled the scene, abandoning the tricycle they had used.
The police traced the tricycle to Mohammed Seidu, who, during questioning, implicated Corporal Umar as his accomplice. Subsequently, Seidu led the authorities to Umar’s residence, where the corporal admitted to the offense and disclosed the whereabouts of 12 stolen bags of cement.
One eyewitness, Evangelist Richard Ampah, who happened to be present during the arrest, shared his account of the events. He said, “I was at home when I received a call about a break-in at a nearby house we were working on. I rushed over and discovered it was true.”
Ampah added, “The perpetrator used a pickaxe to break through a sturdy door. It was a challenging task, but he managed to force his way in, and inside, there were approximately 55 bags of cement.”
“When the police arrived, the suspect led them to the location where he had stashed his loot,” Ampah further stated.
The arrest of Corporal Lansah Umar has sent shockwaves throughout the community of Nyinahin. Even those who were familiar with Umar, such as a mason who worked under him and the assemblyman for the Nyinahin Nkwanta Electoral area, Kwabena Karikari, expressed their disbelief and dismay.
“I know the officer very well, but I can’t understand why he would do this. I never expected him to engage in such behavior. It is truly disheartening, and I am utterly perplexed,” lamented Evangelist Ampah.
According to police sources, both Corporal Lansah Umar and Mohammed Seidu will soon face legal proceedings for their alleged crimes. The incident has occurred at a time when the area has been grappling with a series of break-ins, leaving the residents deeply concerned about their safety and security.
