Peo Leo XIV has through a telegram sent by the Vatican Secretary of State Cardinal Pietro Parolin to Bishop Matthew K. Gyamfi, the President of the Ghana Catholic Bishops’ Conference, expressed his deep sorrow for the loss of two ministers, senior government officials, and military personnel killed in a devastating helicopter crash in Ghana on August 6, 2025.
“His Holiness Pope Leo XIV offers his deepest condolences for the tragic loss of the ministers, government officials, and others in the military helicopter crash,” the telegram stated.
“Commending the souls of the departed to God’s mercy and offering prayers for those mourning, particularly their families, the Holy Father assures Ghana of his spiritual support during this sorrowful time.”
The helicopter, carrying five passengers and three crew members, crashed in a dense forest in the Ashanti Region Among the victims were Ghana’s Minister of Defence, Edward Omane Boamah, and the Minister of Environment, Ibrahim Murtala Muhammed, who were travelling to Obuasi to attend an event addressing illegal mining activities.
No one survived the crash.
