Mental health problem is one thing that is given less attention in Ghana.
This week, it was revealed that over 3, 000 people are having a mental health problem in the Brong Ahafo Region alone with over 1, 600 being men.
According to the report which was done by Coalition of NGOs in Health, poverty is the leading cause of mental problems in the Brong Ahafo Region.
Dr Gabriel Panaku who led the research said due to the social responsibilities on men especially, some of them result to the use of alcohol and other drugs which they believe will make them forget about all their problems. Instead, they end up getting mental health problems because as soon as they get to their normal self after taking the drug then they begin to think about their problem again. And when that happens, they end up abusing the drug or alcohol and it then leads to depression.
Dr Gabriel Panaku expounded that it has become difficult to take care of people with mental problems because of Parliament’s inability to pass the Legislative Instrument on Mental Health Act.
“Out of 10 people, the possibility of 3 people getting a mental problem is high”, he said.
“It can happen to anyone as we are all potential mental health patients.”
He expressed his worry and urged Parliament to pass the Legislative Instrument to enable the government to support mental health.
