The leader of United Front Party, Akwasi Addai has added his voice to the annual floods in the capital Accra.
The 2016 Presidential Aspirant believes the only way to put an end to the constant floods in Accra is to relocate the capital to Kimtampo in the Brong Ahafo Region as it has a vast unused land and also the centre of the country.
‘No matter what we do, there will still be floods in Accra’.
‘It looks like all the lands in Accra have been sold and as result, people are moving to Kasoa and some parts of Eastern Region’.
According to him, Accra is still not ideal to be the capital of Ghana again.
The politician-cum-businessman believes we should relocate the capital and build a new city that can match the other capital cities in the world.
Using Abuja and Yamoussoukro in Nigeria and Ivory Coast respectively as an example, he stated the government in those countries move the capital to those cities to decongest the place.
Nigeria relocated their capital from Lagos and Ivory Coast moved theirs from Abidjan.
This, he explained will help us undertake the necessary developmental projects to end the floods in Accra.
Also, he said because every country is relocating their capital from a coastal city to an inner city, we should do the same.
‘The reason is’ should the country get attacked, it will be difficult to protect the capital.
Our centralized system of government has also made Accra chocked. ‘Our administrative capital’ should be relocated to make to start the process.
Akwasi Addai Odike to ABN Ghana that believes the reason why it will be difficult for this to happen is that our leaders do not have the courage to do it because the Gas will not be pleased with it.
