For the first time in over a decade, Argentina and FC Barcelona’s Lionel Messi could not make the final list of the players nominated for the FIFA World Best.
Cristiano Ronaldo of Portugal and Juventus, Luka Modric of Real Madrid and Croatia and Liverpool and Egypt’s Mohammed Salah made the final list for this year’s award.
Modric, last week won the UEFA Footballer of the Year Award after beating both Ronaldo and Salah.
Messi and Ronaldo have been dominating the award for years but after Argentina’s poor World Cup performance and Barcelona’s elimination from the UEFA Champions League, Messi could not make the cut this year.
The last time neither Messi nor Ronaldo won the award was 2007 when AC Milan and Brazil’s Ricardo Kaka won it.
