According to Madam Justina Owusu-Banahene, the Bono Regional minister, around 70% of poultry farms in the Dormaa Municipality have collapsed due to the lack of soya beans and wheat brans required to feed the birds. She explained that this shortage has led to an increase in thievery, petty theft, and illegal mining in the area. As a result, many young people employed in the industry have lost their jobs, leaving them unemployed. The Bono Regional minister stated that the Russian-Ukraine war and the COVID-19 pandemic have contributed to the shortage of poultry feed, as the country can no longer import soya beans and wheat from Ukraine due to the ongoing conflict.
Speaking at the opening session of the 2023 Annual Conference and Exhibition of the Insurance Brokers Association of Ghana (IBAG), currently underway in Sunyani, Madam Owusu-Banahene asked insurance companies to offer assistance to affected farmers. The five-day conference, which has over 200 insurance brokers and companies in attendance, is centered on the theme, “The Effect of the Global Economic Challenges on the Ghanaian Insurance Industry.”
Madam Owusu-Banahene emphasized that the poultry industry in Dormaa Municipality and the region is severely impacted by the Russian-Ukraine war and COVID-19. She urged insurance companies to assist the affected farmers. Professor Justice Ofori, the Commissioner of Insurance at the National Insurance Commission (NIC), urged the Association to work hard and contribute to the nation’s post-COVID-19 economic recovery process. He also advised insurance companies to protect the interests of policyholders.
