Rwanda’s women’s football team coach, Grace Nyinawumuntu, has been temporarily suspended by the national federation, Ferwafa, following a series of controversial remarks she made about Ghana’s Black Queens. The suspension was handed down in the aftermath of Rwanda’s defeat to Ghana in an African Cup of Nations (Afcon) qualifier, where Nyinawumuntu claimed that the Ghanaian players resembled men in their physicality.
The comments made by Nyinawumuntu implied that her team had been intimidated by the robust playing style of the Ghanaian athletes, ultimately leading to a disheartening 7-0 loss in the match held in Kigali. Nyinawumuntu asserted, “They have girls who we think have male hormones. They are girls who are like men. Our team was scared… when they got to the pitch, they conceded because they were scared.”

In response to the highly controversial remarks, Ferwafa issued an official statement confirming Nyinawumuntu’s suspension “until further notice.” The governing body cited her “inappropriate choice of diction” following the game between Rwanda and Ghana as the primary reason for the suspension.
Consequently, Rwanda will travel to Accra for the second leg of the qualifier without their head coach, Grace Nyinawumuntu. This development adds a layer of complexity to an already challenging situation for the Rwandan team. Meanwhile, the Black Queens of Ghana will aim to build on their previous strong performance and secure another resounding victory in their quest for Afcon qualification.
