In her revealing memoir titled ‘Unveiled: My Journey as Yvonne Nelson,’ the renowned Ghanaian actress shares a poignant story of personal struggle and difficult choices. One of the notable revelations in her book revolves around her decision to terminate a pregnancy due to the man involved refusing to take responsibility, citing his involvement with another woman.
Yvonne Nelson recounts that this incident took place in 2010 and involved a rapper based in Tema. She discloses that the rapper in question was none other than Sarkodie, who has since become a celebrated icon and a recipient of multiple awards.
The actress narrates her experience, recalling the moment when she went for a pregnancy test accompanied by her friend, Karen. Overwhelmed by emotions, Yvonne was unable to open the test result herself. Karen, however, read it aloud, confirming her worst fears.
In her own words, Yvonne shares, “On an ordinary day, I would have found humor in Karen’s exclamation and engaged in lively banter. But this was no laughing matter. It was a grim revelation that had the potential to upend my world. I wasn’t solely responsible for the situation, so I contacted the man whose actions had led to this outcome. His name is Michael Owusu Addo, known as Sarkodie, a respected Ghanaian musician.”
During that period, Sarkodie was still an up-and-coming artist, his future uncertain, and his path in life not yet fully paved. Yvonne explains that he was living with his mother and not prepared to shoulder the responsibility while still being dependent on her. Their connection, she clarifies, wasn’t necessarily a serious relationship, but rather a bond formed through their shared love for music. Chapter 8 of Yvonne Nelson’s memoir, launched on June 18, 2023, unveils her attempt to terminate the pregnancy by using certain concoctions provided by a colleague. Unfortunately, these attempts proved unsuccessful, and she discovered she was still pregnant.

She reflects, “The first thought that struck me when he declined to support the pregnancy was my own life. Growing up, I lacked a father figure. I constantly grappled with the fact that I was an unplanned child. I questioned whether the man I shared a surname with was truly my father. How could I bring another life into this world, knowing they would face rejection just like me? If there was a way to spare someone else the trauma I endured, why would I reject that option?”
Yvonne Nelson recalls the eventual success of the abortion, but deeply regrets the decision, acknowledging it as one of the most significant mistakes of her life. If given the chance to turn back time, she emphatically states that she would have chosen differently.
