The Economic and Organised Crime Office (EOCO) has confirmed that it carried out a lawful search at the residence of Ghanaian dancehall musician, Charles Nii Armah Mensah, popularly known as Shatta Wale, as part of a joint operation with the United States Federal Bureau of Investigation (FBI) and the US Justice Department.
In a press release issued on August 5, 2025, EOCO said the search was conducted at Shatta Wale’s Trassaco Valley Phase 1 home in Accra by its Surveillance and Asset Recovery Unit (SARU). The operation, according to EOCO, was undertaken in response to a 2023 request from the FBI and the US Department of Justice relating to financial crimes committed by Nana Kwabena Amuah, who is currently serving an 86-month prison sentence in the United States.
The search led to the seizure of a 2019 Lamborghini Urus believed to be one of the assets linked to Amuah’s criminal enterprise. EOCO revealed that the car was in Shatta Wale’s possession.
“The officers were professional and civil and the search and seizure occurred without incident,” EOCO stated. “Nii Armah had pleaded with officers that he did not want the seizure to be made public because the vehicle was a big part of his brand.”
As a result of this plea, Shatta Wale was allowed to voluntarily surrender the vehicle, which is now in the custody of EOCO. The agency clarified that officers of the SARU unit were armed during the operation as a matter of standard safety protocol.
EOCO further noted that the FBI and the Justice Department intend to submit a formal Mutual Legal Assistance (MLA) request to the Government of Ghana for the return of the vehicle to the United States as part of Amuah’s $4.7 million restitution.
In a social media post on the same day, Shatta Wale accused EOCO officials of storming his house with guns and singled out EOCO’s Executive Director, Raymond Archer, for allegedly leading the operation. He described the incident as an act of intimidation and warned of possible political consequences.
“EOCO boss, the President of Ghana didn’t put you in that office to come and humiliate the citizens of this country. Remember God no sleep,” he wrote. “Raymond Archer EOCO Boss, Ibe you go make NDC go out of power next 4yrs. Bringing guns to my house was uncalled for.”
Meanwhile, EOCO has identified Shatta Wale and a former senior officer of the National Signals Bureau (NSB) as persons of interest in the ongoing investigation and stated that both individuals will be invited to assist with further inquiries in the coming days.
