It is with great sadness that we report the passing of South African rapper Costa Tsobanoglou, better known by his stage name Costa Titch. The 28-year-old collapsed while performing at the Ultra Music Festival at the Expo Centre in Johannesburg on Saturday night and was later pronounced dead.
Several videos circulating on social media showed Costa Titch falling down during his performance, with his security helping him back to his feet. However, he fell again and was eventually escorted off stage. According to a report by the South African website Weekend Argus, the rapper had a history of epilepsy.
In a statement, Costa Titch’s family confirmed his passing and expressed their grief. They thanked emergency responders and everyone who was present in his last hours on earth. The family also asked for privacy as they try to come to terms with the tragic loss.
Costa Titch began his career as a backing dancer before transitioning to a rapper. He was known for his hit song “Big Flexa” and had recently signed with Akon’s record label Konvict Kulture. Akon himself featured on the remix of “Big Flexa.”
The death of Costa Titch is the latest tragedy to hit the South African music industry. In February 2023, popular rapper Kiernan Forbes, also known as AKA, was fatally shot in Durban. In February 2022, musician Rikhado Makhado, known as Riky Rick, was found dead from an apparent suicide. The loss of Costa Titch is a significant blow to the music industry and to his fans, who loved and idolised him under his stage name.
