The Office of the Special Prosecutor is set to receive ¢180 million in the coming year to fight corruption.
“In this budget, the Special Prosecutor’s Office has been allocated an amount of GH¢180 million from GoG with a commitment to provide additional resources during the course of 2019 to enable the Special Prosecutor’s Office to carry out its mandate,” the Finance Minister, Ken Ofori-Atta said during the presentation of the 2019 budget statement in Parliament today.
Nana Addo, before being elected President promised Ghanaians that he will set up the Office of the Special Prosecutor whose sole responsibility will be to fight corruption and protect the public purse.
Since the Office was established early this year, the Special Prosecutor, Martin Amidu on numerous occasions has complained about the lack of resources to enable him in his work.
A few days ago, there were reports in the media that Amidu was thinking about quitting his job as he felt useless. However, the announcement by the Finance Minister today will surely change his mind if he truly considered quitting his job as the Special Prosecutor.
