A 58-year-old steel bender, Michael Asante, has been sentenced to 21 years imprisonment by an Accra Circuit Court for the defilement of a seven-year-old girl in Nungua, Accra. Asante, who had pleaded not guilty to the charge, was found guilty by the court presided over by Mrs. Christina Cann at the end of the trial.
The facts of the case, as presented by Inspector Opoku Aniagyei, revealed that the complainant is the uncle of the victim. Both the accused person, now convict, and the complainant lived in the same vicinity in Nungua.
On the evening of May 3, 2021, the victim went behind their house, where a bathroom and toilet are located, to urinate. Asante followed her and lured her into the bathroom, where he proceeded to have sexual intercourse with her on the bare floor.
The prosecution stated that the complainant, who happened to pass by the scene, saw Asante and the victim together. Upon spotting the complainant, Asante hastily left the bathroom.
After engaging with the victim, the complainant learned that Asante had sexually assaulted her on multiple occasions. Disturbed by the revelation, the complainant took the victim to the Nungua Domestic Violence and Victims Support Unit of the Ghana Police Service to lodge a formal complaint.
The police issued a medical report form to the complainant, who sought medical care for the victim. Asante was subsequently arrested.
As a result of his conviction, Asante has been sentenced to 21 years imprisonment for the crime of defilement.
