An Accra Circuit Court has sentenced two individuals to 45 months imprisonment each for their involvement in stealing bales of ladies’ underwear valued at GH¢129,600. Samsu Abdul, a trader, and Rashiru Yakubu, a businessman, were charged with conspiracy to steal, stealing, and unlawful entry. Although they initially pleaded not guilty, the court found them guilty at the end of the trial.
The court, presided over by Evelyn Asamoah, delivered the verdict, sentencing both individuals to 45 months in prison. Additionally, two other individuals, Kwame Arhin and Jabril Iddrisu, were found not guilty and were acquitted and discharged.
According to the prosecution, the complainant, Mathias Agbo, a businessman residing in Korle-Bu, Accra, discovered that goods in his warehouse at Kantamanto were missing on February 22, 2022. He reviewed CCTV footage, which showed young men opening the padlock to his warehouse with their keys and stealing three bales of ladies’ underwear valued at GH¢14,400.
The thieves continued to steal more items on subsequent occasions, with nine bales of ladies’ underwear valued at GH¢129,600 being stolen in total.
Samsu Abdul was arrested and admitted to stealing two bales of ladies’ underwear, while his accomplices stole seven bales. However, Abdul failed to lead the police to the whereabouts of his accomplices, and the receiver of the stolen items could not be traced.
Subsequently, Rashiru Yakubu was arrested based on intelligence gathering. Yakubu mentioned Kwame Arhin as the person who had cut the master key used to open the complainant’s warehouse, leading to Arhin’s arrest. Yakubu also named Jabril Iddrisu as the person to whom they had sold the stolen ladies’ underwear, resulting in Iddrisu’s arrest as well.
