In the view of Henry Asante Twum, the Communications Director of the Ghana Football Association, the Ghana Premier League has experienced a decline in attendance at match venues due to the inconsistent performance of its prominent clubs.
Asante Twum emphasized that Asante Kotoko and Hearts of Oak, which boast the largest fan bases in the league, have the potential to draw substantial crowds to the stadiums if they can maintain a consistent string of victories.
He highlighted how, in the past, supporters of Asante Kotoko and Hearts of Oak would flock to the stadiums in large numbers well before kickoff. However, the same cannot be said in the present as a result of the clubs’ declining performance levels.
“Looking specifically at Hearts of Oak and Asante Kotoko, the Asante Kotoko we knew in the past would have Baba Yara Stadium filled with fans by 12 or 1 pm. Sometimes people would even attempt to climb the poles behind the stadium just to catch a glimpse of the match. A similar scenario used to unfold in Accra,” expressed Henry Asante Twum.
The GFA Communications Director pointed out that these clubs have relinquished their dominance in the Ghana Premier League due to their inconsistent performances. He firmly believes that once these top clubs regain their winning form, the local league will experience a revival.
“I have noticed that these clubs have also been lacking consistency in terms of their performance. I cannot recall a time this season when Hearts of Oak won three consecutive games. Similarly, I cannot remember the last time Kotoko secured three successive victories,” he remarked.
Asante Twum further elaborated, “When a team lacks consistency, it discourages fans from attending matches. For instance, after Kotoko thrashed Kotoku Royals 5-1 one week, they suffered defeat in their subsequent game. Similarly, after beating Accra Lions 4-0 on the weekend, they went on to lose their next match.”
“In recent times, Kotoko won a home game against Bibiani Goldstars but then lost to Olympics and settled for a draw against Tamale City at Baba Yara Stadium. So, where is the consistency?” concluded Henry Asante Twum.
