UG SRC proposes review of grading system, wants ‘A’ pegged at 70%

The Students’ Representative Council of the University of Ghana has proposed a review of the grading system for the second semester of the 2019/2020 academic year.

The student body, although appreciates concerted efforts by management and lecturers of the institution in resolving the challenges that have risen with the online learning programme, wants grade ‘A’ pegged at 70% to 100% mark.

Currently, the University uses a grading system where 80% to 100% amount to an ‘A’ with 75%-79% and 70%-74% amounting to ‘B+’ and ‘B’ respectively.

According to the SRC, the seeming disregard for the concerns of students about the Sakai Learning Management System and the entire e-learning process calls for a total overhaul and review of the grading system as is currently being used by the School.

Moreover, the SRC seeks an outright caution to lecturers planning to administer real timed online exams, a development, which if not addressed as soon as possible, might render scores of students disadvantaged.

“Due to the inconsistencies on the mainly used platform for this roll out thus SAKAI platform, we ask that lecturers should be strictly advised not to use only time bound quizzes in their continuous assessments for students. We have received numerous complaints of students not being able to complete such quizzes on the sakai platform due to the unresponsive nature of the platform at instances when there are a lot of students accessing the site at the same time,” part of the proposal dated May 27, 2020 read.
